NOTE: CONTAINS SPOILERS
First: THANK YOU FOR READING MY BOOK (and caring enough to seek answers to your confusion about the ending!) Final copies of books often have small errors, but the one in The Lobotomist’s Wife has really confused some readers so I decided to clarify it.
In the first print edition (and early Kindle/Audio editions) of The Lobotomist’s Wife, there is a sentence that reads: “She then converted the carriage house into a cozy one-bedroom home where she now lived with Edward.”
In early drafts, I toyed with having Ruth and Edward end up romantically entangled; but I ultimately felt that that was not true to Ruth. Her happily(ish) ever after had to be to finally find a “family” who loved and appreciated her for who she was, even with the mistakes she made. The two words “with Edward” in the sentence above should have been deleted in the final manuscript, but I missed them! They will be removed from future printings of the book (if I am that lucky!)
So, to be super clear, in the end, Ruth lives ALONE in the carriage house. Edward is her best friend – like a brother (filling some of the void of losing Harry.) Edward is gay and lives with Steven in the city.
Was this the ending you anticipated? Drop me a line and let me know!
